Ocean & Coasts: Aboard a Modern Ship of Discovery
During the month of November the ship Okeanos Explore with Adam Skanke will explore on the North Atlantic Ocean between cape Hatteras, North Coralina and the U.S. Canadian territorial boundary. They will explore the Northeast canyon and continetal slope. They will use maps to see where the canyons are located. Also by using map they will see how the slope support a diversity of habitat. Also with the topography will create a "Biodiversity Hotspot" to support spices including unique deep water corals and fishes. They will collect data by using multibeam and single beam sonar. Another expedetion is during the month of March to April 2012 to investigate the diversity and the habitat and to see marine life in the northern Gulf of Mexico. They will divide into three "legs" (teams). One leg will identify a number of targets to explore during leg II and III. They will look for cold seeps, deep coral communities, undersea canyong, shipwrecks and mud volcanos and brine pods. They will used remotely operated vehicle (ROV) called "Little Hercules" and NOAA Seririos cameras sled and lighting plantform on the ship Okeanos.
