Ocean & Coasts: CTD & Friends
What is a CTD? Well a CTD is a devices that measure Conductivity, Temperature, and Depth. The Conductivity measure solution coducts electricity and is directly related to salinity. It measures the sea water density. The CTD is attach on a big metal frame called a Rosette, that hold water sample in bottles that is used to data from each different depth on the sea. It can measure physical or chemical properties. The CTD also measure valcanoes, vents, hydrothmermal and more deep sea features. The CTD also has sensors called Light Scattering Senor (LSS) and an Oxidationb Reduction Petential sensor (ORP). The LSS measures the concentration of hyfrothemal particle tendency of a ubtance to gain or lose electrons. The CTD is connected to the ship and the data are sent through a cable. The scientist from the ship can send signa tothe CTD to let it know when to close the bottle to obtain the water sample. With some samlples the scientist analyses it and some are put away for later analyses.
