Ocean Pathfinder: Latitude & Longitude
There is a system to use for geographic coordinates is the latitude & longitude system. This is based on two sets of "imaginary" circles on the earth's surface. One set has a circle that pass through the north & south poles this is known "meridians of longitude". The other se of circle lies on plane surfaces cutting through the earth perpendicular to the polar axis, this is known as " parallel of latitude". The geographic coordinates are measure if degrees. The measurements of longitude is passing through Greenwich, England & this meridian is called the "prime meridian" & it represent 0 degrees. Also is 180 degrees going either way to east to west of the prime meridian. There is a system that explained the earth surface features. This system is known the "Mercator Projection", what it does it explain the cylinder that wraps so the long axis of the cylinder is parallel to the polar axis of the earth & also the cylinder touches the earth's equator. There is a feature of the mercator projection that the meridians of longitude appear straight vertical lines & don't converge at the poles.
