Introduction to Oceanography: Part #1
There are 5 oceans in the planet one is the Atlantic Ocean and is between North, South American & Europe, Africa. The second ocean is the India Ocean where is in Asia, and the third BIGGEST ocean is the Pacific Ocean where is between North, South America and Asia. The fourth smallest ocean is the Arctic Ocean where is up north and the fifth ocean is Antarctica Ocean. Theres a lot of seas like the Black Sea, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Sea of Japan, Red Sea, Java Sea, Flores Sea, Aral Sea, and even the Caribbean Sea. They are isolated and they are mostly surrounded by land. For example the Mediterranean Sea also it also has smaller seas but have their own current.
Bays & Gulfs
Bays are not seas but they can be small or large. Also there are a lot of Bays like the Hudson Bay, Bay of Biscay, and Buffin Bay.If a bay is much larger it's a Gulf. For example the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of California they also have bays.
Peninsula (Cape)
A Peninsula (Cape) can form a bay. Is a piece of large land that reach out through the bay
The 1st people to go to sea.
The First people that explore the Seas were the Polynesians. They went through North American to Asia. Also mostly the Polynesians travel around the world on sea than everybody else.
Vikings.
Vikings was the one that travel from Europe to Iceland to GreenLand to reach North America.

In the 15th century there were a lot of explores that started exploding all over the world. Like Colombus they thought that if they go to the west they will get to the east easier and faster.
Ferdinand Magellan was an explore. Magellan was a Portuguese sailor. He wanted to go to south east Asia because there were many spices. So he left Spain in 1519 with 5 ships and about 25o mens. He was looking a passage through South America and he did. But he died on April 27 1521 by islanders in the Phillippines.

HMS Challenger & Matthew Maury & Prince Albert.
The HMS Challenger was the first expedition were about 200 scientist join the crew to study the oceans. 2 men were the most important during this expedition Matthew Maury and Prince Albert. Matthew Maury was called the Father of Oceanography because he was a mapper of the oceans and currents.
